So Sorcery in the Hyborian age has been the point of a lot of hot debates between me & our brave Guild leader (If you don’t know him, he's the bouncy PvP oddball named Tavio, cool guy, abit dimwitted, love you Tav 😁)

Anywayz, when I first joined the AoC RP community I RPed my Demonologist in such a way that he was totally like a Warcraft Sorcerer, or any wizard from a High Fantasy universe, which not only made a lot of plots irrelevant because seriously "got a problem? Poof Magic! Now you don't" can ruin a lot of drama necessary for the RP, we had a lot of discussions about it trying to categorize what's OP and what's OK…get it? Yeah…Moving on 😅

And I must say that both him & I have grown in Knowledge and broadened our horizons about it, I embraced his ideas, but also needed a solid ground to accept them completely and he himself learned that sorcery in the Hyborian age, while different than the usual Fantasy genre magic (Magic is NOT Sorcery, just as Wizard is NOT a sorcerer, more on that later) The Sword & Sorcery…well…sorcery part, has caused a lot of angst between many an RPer in the Community simply because people enjoy being powerful & unbeatable so much that it takes the fun out of their characters & by association their RP….

Now a Simple Disclaimer…I'm not as experienced as I may sound like since I've been RPing in Hyboria for maybe….3-4 years? Probably less BUT I have devoured a lot of reading material & would use it to help define the Hyborian Sorcery & of course if you don't feel like reading the ramblings of a 24 years old boy….I'd refer you to search and download The Secrets of Skelos Conan RPG book, it has a lot of useful information, some rules & even some examples on artifacts, rituals AND smaller less complicated, yet magnificent spellwork.

To Begin with I'll establish the difference between Magic & Sorcery, so bear with me, Magic is the fairy stuff of most fantasy genres it is what makes life easy for both the caster & his people few examples may include your typical fireball spells or similar stuff, teleportation…it has little ritual to it and it has practically no tax or cost on the caster and his lifespan/body/soul/mind or even psyche….think of anything fairy-like or easy to perform…

Sorcery on the other hand, the term I'd use to refer to Hyborian spellwork, it a much more visceral & gloomy activity, it is dark, bloody & otherworldly, the stuff of horror, every punch you throw has a cost, every spell you perform no matter how insignificant taxes you one way or the other, it is highly dependent upon ritual & you almost always need an artifact or two under your belt to use, a sorcerer is rarely if ever a benevolent force, he uses the darker aspects of his craft or Real sorcery to further his own ends, even helping others is always for a benefit he will cash on in later on….other times though because the sheer idea that sorcery practically leaves its mark on the soul and calls for a price to pay one way or the other, same goes for priests by the way, while the source of their powers is different than that of your average sorcerer/wizard but not so different from the Shaman, they only use their powers to further their own gains, in Conan's world…No one who is powerful does things just for being a good Samaritan or a benevolent cause, there's always a pragmatic reason, always a hidden design, not necessarily so overt & not present at the time maybe he gains the trust of a powerful man/woman so that he could call on them at a later date…Anything is possible and all bets are off when dealing with a Hyborian sorcerer & in this instance a Cimmerian is most wise when he reminds us with one of the first lessons he learns growing up; Never Trust a Sorcerer!

That is not to say however that Hyborian sorcery is a boring, lackluster, act based solely on tricks, Hyborian sorcery has levitation in its arsenal, reanimating statues, many tricks that are far more destructive than your average fireball, this is a set of Paragraphs quoted from the Secrets of Skelos RPG book;

"Sorcery is a subtle but Powerful force, an experienced sorcerer can cast spells undreamed of in other fantasy games, but he may need to sacrifice a dozen virgins, dose himself up with black lotus, cast the spell and then rest for several days afterwards, rather than simply being able to fire off magic whenever he chooses.

During Conan’s time, the Hyborian Age, much of the most powerful magic has been lost for centuries and more. The wizards of Stygia, Khitai and Vendhya are renowned for their arcane lore, but even they would find it difficult to match the power of the sorcerers of Acheron and Old Stygia at their height many thousands of years ago.

But there is still magic in the world, like a serpent in the darkness of a cave. It coils, and waits, and sometimes – it strikes! And a strong man falls dead, though no blade touched his mortal flesh.

The dedicated sorcerer can still hope to attain the power of the elders, but he must work for it. Calling up demon lords, hunting for crumbling scrolls in dusty tombs, searching out fiend-haunted isles in the Western Ocean, gathering magical herbs in devil-infested swamps beyond Khitai...the sorcerer who desires serious magical power must do all these things and more besides. A sorcerer who has a master, coven or secret society to teach him has something of a head start over a lone scholar, but may never learn more than his tutor knows. Even he will need to quest after knowledge if he wishes to achieve his full potential.

More so than any ancient artefact or scholarly teacher, arcane books can grant a sorcerer not mere fragments of the long-lost sorcereous knowledge of the ancients, but full-blown spells, magical formulae, and the secrets of the most powerful wizards of the old times. The book of Skelos is the most fabled and sought-after volume of them all
."

So as you can see, you can do a lot of feats of horrible sorcery but most people tend to forget about one keyword, consequences, I was chatting with Nepthiamun just today and I said that being a Sorcerer is like being Batman, be prepared within reason and you can be awesome, but be TOO prepared and you turn into an OPed godmodder and end up being a Cliché of a Superhero that ends up being shrugged off as not fun to have around or RP with…and we don't want that now, do we?

As I said above Hyborian sorcery is dipped steeply in Ritual & Artifacts…for some rituals even the stars alignment could make all the difference….another common theme in Conan lore is that Sorcery isn't about Creating something out of nothing, it is mostly about transmuting or manipulating what's already there…for instance; to cast a fire stream or a simple "firebolt" the most typical spell in all mystic-using lores, you have to Visualize the fire before being able to conjure it, like seeing a candle burning or a Brazier being there infront of you to look at & if you lost your concentration for even a millisecond your spell will fail….another example; Cold based spells are affected by weather, stronger in winter climates and so much weaker in Hot climates, and you usually conjure it from the air around you, the chill that grips your opponent incapacitating him or her is usually a wind passing over both your location but you as a schooled and educated member of the sorcereous elites, after decades of training can command all the wind around you to pierce that opponent and cut him, or maybe even transmute the air around him into vapor then condensing it into an Ice spike….

Lightning is another matter, but falls prey to the same restriction, you can't rain down thunder and lightning on anyone Anywhere, you must be in an area where it is at least Cloudy in, and this will take a great deal of your concentration and tax your strength GREATLY just to make a single lightning bolt strike an enemy of yours…of course it gets easier when there is a thunderstorm raging above the battlefield already, which is always preferred, as it still conserves some of your strength for other spellwork, and even in the thunderstorm the sheer force of will it takes to make a lightning strike hit your opponent and not around him is risky for he might end up reaching to you and slashing your throat or shooting an arrow in your eye when you pool your attention and concentration completely to making it rain thunder and lightning on your opponent, so a sorcerer always has other Non-sorcereous devices with him just to be prepared in case of facing adversity; Darts, tamed animals, Demon minions that are disguised into other forms but these take will to command as well as an artifact to cow them in fear *more on that at a later date*

The Power of the Gods, which is the magic of most clergymen, comes directly as implied from the deities both Gods and Demons, who all dwell in the Outer dark, which is the area commented on by both Robert E. Howard & H.P. Lovecraft as the cosmos outside the Stars surrounding our galaxy, Shamans & Druids refer to it as the belt of light surrounding the world, and to summon these powers for you to be a conduit also taxes you greatly though I would say It corrupts your soul to a lesser degree if you're, say, using the power of Mitra as opposed to the Power of Set & if you're manipulating weather or Fire you still fall under the same restrictions stated above, your spirit & your faith take the toll, the stronger your faith in your deity & the stronger your spirit, the more devout you are and the more you keep communion with your deity the more powerful you become and the more amazing your…miracles can be, but still, you keep the use of this grand feats to further your goals, the Priests of Set in Stygia rarely if ever use actual sorcery when dealing with the masses, they prefer to use charms and sleight of hand instead and it works, that's what you always need to keep in mind, furthermore the power of your Faith-spirit based power depends solely on the power of your God….which in turn depends upon the amount of worshippers he has and how influential he truly is…for instance Mitra is immensely powerful & so is Set…Ishtar can compare to them, but say an Atlantean deity? Nope he can be quashed easily and has no power simply because Atlantis is destroyed and no worshippers for him remain, consider the Hyborian gods as the result of your belief in them, a Psychic resonance that manifests itself in the warp taking shape and form and having a consciousness ….Gods are created by their believers essentially, fuelled by them & their boons is given to their most ardent followers….this is for your Devout people.

I would discuss healing but I decided to make it a topic of its own on a next episode posted on a later date….this will conclude your intro into basic sorcery, I will write many episodes later on to explore more specific parts of the Hyborian sorcereous tapestry; Demonology, Necromancy, Healing, sleight of hand or Hedge Magic, different type of Casters, Artifacts *created by you, or ones you seek in the real world* and many more, so if you're a caster who dreads being called OP and wish to be OK and Fun….stay tuned, and don't worry, while you might think you're being nerfed, you're actually turning into being interesting
"I've had many guises & names, walked many a land, fought many a war & advised many kings, both great and small...I'm the Undying one, the Eternal one, my Glory illuminates. Golden as the halls of my patron...my influence will be cast unto this world like a shadow. both in this age & till Usiriad the Eternal inherits the universe...I'm the Undying Vizier...you dare stand before me?!"

Faith & Fervor (Gods & Spirit Based Sorcery)

So yesterday the Sorcery intro got a lot of mixed reviews, as expected complaints about either nerfing or the inapplicability of the rules practically into the Roleplaying, paraphrasing here that one cannot spend time emoting his preparation & the toll his instant cast takes upon him….Fear not though, those who liked that, we've decided to keep these things as Merano lore-wise sorcery, not necessary applicable to others….we will find middle ground someday, evolution takes time….

Disclaimer: I'm not Thoth, so my knowledge is fallible and limited at times, if you have a PoV and make a good argument perhaps we could all benefit from it, this is not a mandatory set of rules, this isn’t the *insert religious text* it's simply an argument in favor of order & continuity….thank you for viewing and read on if you're still interested.

So to begin with one of the key elements about Gods in the Hyborian age is as stated they draw power from their followers, via their beliefs, their rituals & their adherence to the teachings, and as the gods grow stronger because of you, you begin to gain favor with them, the more 'Pious' and adherent to the laws you the more inclined the gods become to help you, however the sorcery a priest or devout practitioner of Faith-based magic doesn't come from the Outer dark…unlike the effort it takes a sorcerer or wizard to establish a link between the demons and other entities In the outer dark & fend off other unsavory entities while meditating to fill up his mystic power reserves, the Pious & the Devout draw power directly from their own spirit essence, which is easier to access…BUT…can be exhausting…

There are three elements going into the Sorcery of the gods (I will call that field Miracles for easier reference)
So performing miracles is based on:

1-Faith

2-Spirit

3-your God (which in its own is divided into other stuff)

So first of all; Faith. Faith is basically how you establish link to that God of yours in the first place, by appeasing him with rituals, prayers and following his teachings you sort of increase your points with this god *consider him some sort of a scorekeeper* the more points you have with the said God, the more inclined he becomes to aid you, think of it like you gaining reputation with some faction and the more loved or exalted or higher in rank you are, the more powers you unlock and the more you can actually do, and even all the more frequent you invoke the said god's powers & become an agent of his will and greatness. Your faith increases when you study the Mysteries of your God, the higher you go up the Temple's learning curve and gain a higher rank the more your faith will increase by virtue of your understanding of your deity. For more help on Mysteries and the many Gods of Hyboria I suggest you find the CONAN RPG Book Called Faith & Fervor it is immensely helpful ….

Second; Spirit. Spirit is your equivalent to Sorcereous potential, while a sorcerer meditates to renew his reserves from the Outer Dark, and rejuvenates his mind and his body to take the toll of what he does, be it by sacrifices, by rituals, or by trances. You as a priest sort of do the same, but instead of trancing into the void or the outer dark, you draw your power from within, from contemplating your faith & understanding your god & his doctrines, the more your faith becomes the bigger you spirit reserves become as such the more…miracles you can use….

Last and certainly not least; the Deity you worship and invoke his power….Gods in Howard's world are either grey or neutral forces OR Demons OR Lovecraftian dark Deities AND so rarely benevolent forces….Gods in the Howard world are written to be like humans but with omnipotence (some of them have a level of Omniscience) they picker, they can be tricked, they can be convinced, they can be moody & for the life of the world they cannot interfere in the world's landscape directly….for instance you don't see Set venturing out of the Black Pyramid in Khemi where it Is said his coils rest…even when your god is pleased with you there's a chance that he won't answer your call & maybe some acts to your god he's more inclined to comply with than others, for instance; Set can grant his power to his follower who wants to hurt & destroy but might be abit reluctant if the said priest asks for heals, which is why the priest must have other options, more than one god, knowing their powers and domains so that if one fails to comply another might be more inclined to comply, continuing with the Priest of Set ideal, if Set would destroy but not heal, Maybe Ishiti can be reasoned with to heal…?

Mitra is a deity of Benevolence and order, or so the people think of him as such he's perceived this way, he may be most inclined to help you heal one of his own faith, another Mitran I mean, and less inclined to harm one of his faith as well, or he might see no merit in granting you your request altogether and would just shrug you off, when you pray to your God always keep in mind that he can comply but that does not mean he always will, even if your faith is strong & your spirit is awesomely deep…Thoth Amon got his Serpent ring stolen from him and he was severely depowered despite the fact the Ring would always go to Set's most faithful worshipper and devotee, but that did not stop the ring from leaving his master and Thoth-Amon slipping into a state of weakness and get chased out of Stygia or Hunted in the Hour of the Dragon, till he recovered it and got back to his Position of power as the Speaker of Set in the King's court….

The Spirits, elements or Primal gods of the wild fall under a similar if abit different category; the nature-magic practitioner draws his power from the elements by requesting their aid, he doesn’t force it & they can deny him his request if it wasn’t in the benefit of the world, the Druid and Shaman while different in some aspects…they share a symbiotic bond with the source of their powers, for instance a Druid/shaman in Karakorum can be struggling with communing with the elements or the spirits of the world…Now I say Druids are different than Shamans because the sources of their power differs….

Druids draw their power from Primal gods that are appeased with savage & usually bloody rituals they have a degree of contempt for all the civilized world…the druid also draws his powers from the 'Alive' Aspects of the world; Flora & Fauna mainly, which is why he prefers to dwell in the world out of the cities, appeasing his gods and gaining animal allies and understanding the nature of all life & knowledge of the wild life.

Shamans on the other hand commune with the more 'lifeless' aspects of the natural world; the elements that are air, earth, fire, water….your interpretation of what is considered an element but it's a basic concept , they consider the world an animistic place where every single life form has a spirit of its own & such spirit can be parlayed with to gain a certain power source, which is strongest outside city walls and weakest when cut away from that world, there were rumors of Hyrkanian shamans that would meditate into the Outer Dark and fight powerful entities to protect Our world empowered by the spirits of the world where his physical form is rested.

Healing is one of the miracles that can be performed by all those who practice faith based magic; and as stated before healing comes from the Healer as he acts as a conduit to the god/force that he serves and as a conduit he can only channel the power of the deity….but as stated the Gods & Elements are not always so accommodating, so it is advised that from time to time you be able to heal but sometimes you can't, which depends on the person you're trying to heal; maybe you are a priest of Mitra who wants to heal your friend who believes in other gods , or in Set whom Mitra despises, so Mitra refuses to aid you despite your immense faith & vast reserves of Spirit…maybe as a shaman/druid you try to heal your friend who's reputed to hunt animals for the sheer pleasure of it or has done harm one way or the other to the elements or scored many an affront to the world as a Necromancer or a summoner of demons or a Sorcerer who communes with entities that desire to bring destruction upon the world whose interests you represent as such your deity refuses to grant you the power to heal him….because sometimes a God heals only those who have faith in him or share ideals with him/her and sometimes he simply….Doesn't.

But this is sorcereous healing. Just because your Deity refused to help you, doesn’t mean you don’t have a backup plan; as a priest you're well versed in Herbalism, Alchemy & arts that allow you to gather ingredients and make ointments or healing materials that don’t heal instantly *you almost never heal instantly unless you're granted the power from your god* Healing in the Hyborian age either by ingredients and potions OR by powers acts as a catalyst that enhances the nature healing capabilities of the body of the said injured person…the deeper or more serious the wound the more effort it takes you, and the higher toll it takes on your body….and even when you heal a deep wound saving a life, it may close the puncture wound but it could leave Scars, which can be removed by a surgeon and not everyone possesses this skill and most certainly it can't be done in one day or in the inn. Or have this area slightly weaker for a while till a *insert time period here* passes for him to return to his prime condition….

Healing is like the aggressive interaction between players, it requires coordination with the person you plan on healing, ask if he wants to be healed via magic or normal means and then tell him that your magic may or may not work…maybe do a Coin toss *keep one in close proximity or buy one from your guild city* Chance is one of the elements most people forget about in RP and it can lead to a great deal of angst…it serves as a safety buffer for when two stubborn RPiers play together and they adore their characters so much that they don't want them to lose or look bad…so they depend on Chance…Unbiased, Unprejudiced *Harvey Dent's Voice*
Anyway this is my take on Healing and the Gods and as stated above, for more indepth take on the Various Hyborian Gods & Their Mysteries and other details look for the RPG Book Called Faith & Fervor and try to get it and devour it, you will mostly note that the RPG Books & The REH Original work is where I draw Inspiration so in reading Recommendations I'd ask you to look up the Secrets of Skelos & Faith And Fervor….Thank you for reading and enjoy your RP experience.

Where is the place? I logged in today to check the responses to my post and found it was deleted.

On the topic of coin toss....the problem with a simple coin toss is you may want to consider modifiers depending on caster power or receiver power. For those interested I made an aoc game table on roll20.net.

The toss is simply made if you & the other RPer cant make a decision...you will find that I mostly emphasize on coordinating with others and communicating with them whenever the action you do affects others...

it's like when someone's about to cast something and you charge him *attempt to charge him* the end result is him losing concentration *unless he can find a quick solution...a dart, a cobra in his robes' folds, anything* how will it be resolved? just ask him/her and if you're too reluctant to see yourself in a bad position *cant bring yourself to see yourself looking bad xD * choose a neutral method, the coin toss is simple, we're not trying to complicate things & a character chart might be a bit tricky to implement for ppl who have no tabletop experience....

More nods...a night of nods.

I see.

Makes sense. I wasn't that far off to begin with during Belda's birthing, and fairly on-target as it progressed. Fair enough.

Thanks for this post/thread!

You Don't necessarily have to be wrong to widen your horizons now, do you? just consider it a guideline of sorts...or just a read and a PoV....and thank you for reading 😁
